http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2014/02/04/271117790/wanna-smoke-it-could-cost-you-a-tooth-the-fda-warns-teens

Today in 5C we were discussing the cigarette companies' targeting of teenagers in their ad campaigns, so this radio broadcast from NPR is along those lines.

Listen to the above news story and then answer the following questions as a comment to this post:

1. Do you agree or disagree with the anti-cigarette ads that are targeted to teenagers? Explain.
2. What is done in your country to encourage and/or discourage teenagers from smoking?

16 comments:

  1. 1. I agree that the anti-cigarette ads targeted to teenagers. Because teenagers should know that:
+ smoking causes a lot of long-term disease
+ smoking can affect teenagers outlook such as their teeth, their skin
+ smoking leads teenagers to bad behaviors such as steal, bully at school. They can lost their control.
Those things maybe make teenagers thinking carefully when they want to try smoking.
In my opinion, the people who start smoking when they are teenagers will be easy addicted and hard to quit it in the future, which bring them a lot of problems when they grow up. So I think it’s good if the anti-cigarette ads can help them to avoid smoking.

    2. In my country, the government makes law that “no selling cigarette for people under 18”.
In the city that I live, it is forbidden when students try to smoke in schools. If they smoke, they will be asked to leave school for a week for the first time. The second time, their parents will be invited to school and make a commitment that if their children do that again, they will be failed the class or expelled from the school.

  2. 1. I agree with the anti-cigarette ads targeted to the teenagers (12-17) because they don't focus on the long-term consequences as usual, they emphasize on the short-term consequences on the appearance of teenagers they may have when smoking such as ruining their skin or tooth diseases. At the age from 12-17, the teenagers pay lots of their attention to the appearance and always want to be cooler or more attractive in the others' eyes. Therefore, the teenagers will gradually aware of the bad effects of smoking not only to their health but also to their appearance and try to get rid of smoking or quit it via these ads in anti-smoking campaign.
    2. In Vietnam, my home country, the government requires the cigarette companies to attach the slogan "Smoking is very harmful to health" together with the image of smoking consequences such as mouth diseases or lung cancer on the cover of the cigarette packs. However, the effort of government usually does not work and the quantity of smokers including teenagers has been increasing by days.

  3. 1. I totally agree with the fact that anti-cigarette ads are targeted the teenagers since cigarette consummation may ruins their life harshly. children in the scale of 12-17 are not aware of the consequences of smoking such as teeth and skin disease, heart diseases, and also rude behavior. cigarette companies are well aware that targeting the teenagers is negative that none of them accepted to grant the interview of NPR NEWS. So, any cigarette company trying to target teenagers for the sake of their business must strongly and harshly be punished for its act because the future of the world rely on the teenagers.
    2. In Ivory Coast, the government has prohibited the ads of cigarette on TV, displays the consequences of smoking in the stree and at the entrance of each city. Parents play also an important role in banning cigarette consummation in my country. they prevent their kids to smoke, threaten them by telling them if they smoke they will be beaten. This is the reason why it is rare to see a children under 18 smoking in Ivory Coast.

  4. 1- I agree with the anti-cigarette ads targeted to teenagers due to so many reasons. First of all, as everybody knows, teenagers are the target market of the cigarettes’ companies. They focus on them because they are easy to catch: peer pressure, trying to be “cool”, they have less control of the will power, and the most young the habit start, the most difficult to give up. Secondly, teenagers do not know the consequences cigarettes have or maybe they know it, but do not play attention to it. If they know the consequences, it is very common listen to them saying “that is not going to happen to me” because they think they are immune to any illness or do not believe that really happens. Finally, showing them the short-term consequences on the appearance they can realize it is not that cool how they thought it was and that in some years they wont see themselves how they think they will. Proving that consequences really happen will help them think twice at the moment of making the decision weather smoke or not.

2- In my country, Venezuela, is banned to sell cigarettes to people under 18. Schools do not allow smoke and if some students do it, it could bring bad consequences. In addition, there is a law that says that all the packets of cigarettes have to have a picture with a slogan showing how bad cigarettes are for health. For example, some of them have sick lungs with cancer phrases, others have babies in really bad conditions making references in moms who smoke and go on. Nevertheless, the quantity of teenager smoking has been growing more and more with the years.

  5. 1. I agree with the anti-cigarette ads that are targeted to teenagers because when young people start to smoke at the beginning of the youth there're more likely to get several diseases; long cancer, chronic bronchitis and heart disease are the most common and these may conduced to the death. Furthermore, there are another problems that affect their appearance such as bad breath, teeth, skin, also the fingers that hold the cigarette every day. While the time is passing by, teenagers would develop an habit that at the end it becomes addiction. To avoid these issues, companies should promote anti-cigarette advertisements led for teenagers to teenagers to they realize how dangerous result to smoke cigarettes.

    2. There is nothing in my country related to stop smoking cigarettes but since 2 years ago, the government established a special law in order to specify places where people can't smoke cigarettes such as night clubs, restaurants, stores, and so on, it's only allowed in open spaces witch make difficult to do it.

  6. I agree with the anti-cigarette ads that are targeted to teenagers.
first of all, I would like to say I am a person who anti everything which related to cigarette. I will not deal with any person who smoke. I hate smoking. In my opinion, it is important to teach the teenagers in good things including how harmful of smoking cigarette. The teenagers just think about present. They have short term ideas so adults need to give them the best ways for their future life. Smoking causes several problems not only a health but a financial situation, family, and friend also. Giving them the consequences what will happen after smoking will help them to realize it. I believe that.

    2. In my country, there is no sign that any organization tries to encourage teenagers to not get involve with cigarettes. The government does not care about this issue. It is sad for them.

  7. 1. I agree ant cigarette ads target teenagers because of many reasons. I here would mention two main reasons. First, peer pressure is major fact that teenagers can be affected. Imagine even if you don’t like to smoke you have to smoke because friends who surround you, smoke cigarette. They never realize that they should not smoke even if they do not want. They always think they don’t have any choice because of their surround do. Secondly, some teenager think smoking is a fashion. They feel so cool when they smoke. Specially they like to smoke in front of girls. I have seen some teenagers put out the smoke cicely. This can infer how they feel fun while they are smoking. Despite these facts I think tobacco companies target teenagers as they target market unfortunately.

    2. In my county Sri Lanka, government and parents pay lots of attention to teenager’s smoking addiction. First, teenager cannot buy cigarette or any kind of alcohol from any store. The penalty regulations are very strong for this not only teenager but also sellers. Consequently, sellers are always paying attention about who are their customers. Secondly, people cannot smoke in the public places. If someone disobeys this rule he or she has to pay penalty. The very special thing is these people cannot pay their penalty very easily, because they have to go government office which is not located in the same city or state. It means they have drive fare away for pay penalty.

  8. i agree and disagree at the same time
i agree with anti-cigarette because i know it is very dangerous for the kid and for adult as well, and i disagree because of:
-if the kids start to smoke in early age it's gonna be the parents responsibility not the company
-if they are above 18 that means they have right to choose what ever they like to do.
-also i think making ALCOHOLIC ads to stop is more important than making the cigarette company to stop

in my country the government started to put some freaks pictures on the cigarette bucket

  9. I really agree with anti-cigarette ads because they are helpful for smoker to pay attention to their health and even it is helpful to prevent teenagers to walk in this way and ruin their health.

My country posted a law for smoking. The law prevent anyone who under 18 to smoke. Also, the government started to move the smoking shops and places out of the city to reduce the number of smokers.

  10. I completely agree with the anti-cigarette ads targeted on teenagers for the following reasons.
First of all,the majority of people who smoke like adults or older people have began to smoke at a young age.So it's smarter to begin by adolescents in order to eradicate the phenomenon from the start.
Moreover, adolescents are an easy target because lacking experience. That's why most of them can't resist to the temptation. It can be because they want to belong to a group and not being marginalized. They don't want to be different.
In addition, teenagers including adults have a tendency to thing that bad thing such as death, cancer( all types of cancer) happen to other people and not to them. In their minds, such diseases are a myth.
Last but not least, that add emphasizes on teenagers's physical appearance which is very interesting because that way teenagers will be more sensitive.Simply because when you're a teenager you can be easily influenced by an add that dissuade you to smoke if you don't want to lose your teeth.Adolescents attach importance to their aspect,to their appearance. Cancer progresses inside someone's body even if the exterior's signs appear after a while. On the contrary, fear of loosing teeth is a serious threat for teenagers.
2.In my country, many initiatives are taken to discourage teenagers from smoking. For example, each year ,a lot of campaigns to raise public awareness are organized. Those campaigns go from one city to another.
Next,I have also to mention adds on TV and people ( ex smokers mostly, people suffering from cancer}.

  11. 1. I agree the ads are targeted to teenager. There are two reasons to support my opinion. First of all, the actor in the ads is young. The ads makes teenager smokers feel that I might become he or she. Secondly, the ads tells about short-term symptoms and apperance. Diseases of skin and tooth are related to short term symptoms and apperance that are important for young people.

    2. In my country, Korea, it's illegal to sell and buy for young people under 18. Also, the government is planning to raise the price of tobacco. And i was a teenager, school.had a class of the risks of tabacoo.

  12. i agree with abdulaziz when he said that it is the parents responsibility when a child start smoking , but if he or she likes it no matter what the parents do they can not change anything. Honestly whenever i see the first commercial i feel like i want to smoke haha. and speaking of those freaks picture they didn't help people avoid tobacco in my country . As a matter of fact people look forward to see new pictures.

1- I strongly agree with the anti-cigarette ads that are targeted to teenagers. The responsible persons of taking care about these teenagers are parents. In this revolutionary time, many parents abandon this responsibility. As a result, these teenagers need the person who notices them and opens their eyes on the other side that they have never thought about in this serious way.

2- In my country, the government has put a ghastly picture of the consequences of smoking on the cigarette bucket to remind smokers about what they are really doing inside their bodies. Also, we have a law that prohibits selling cigarettes for people under 18 years old. Unfortunately, many sellers do not enforce this law and sell cigarette for those teenagers.

  14. 1.in my opinion i think that kind of ads must not come from cigarette's companies because they are not going to say something bad to themselves . Otherwise yes i agree especially if it came from Doctors.

2.in my country , they dont sell cigarette to people who are under 18 years old , also parents and teachers tell teenagers how danger smoking it is

  15. 1. From my point of view, I agree the anti-cigarette ads target to teenagers because of some reasons. Students do not believe too much about long term health effects. Besides, companies also use the image of bullies to prove that smoking is not good.
    2. In Vietnam, in every store selling cigarette, they usually have posters such as smoking affects your health or can cause cancer and so on, the purpose to decrease the amount of people smoking every time they buy cigarette.

  16. 1- i totally agree with the anti-cigarette ads target to teenagers for the following reasons. First of all , teenager do not realized how much nicotine can damage their health. Based on many experiences did in this field , scientists have discovered that nicotine can cause cancer , bronchitis or affect teenager's teeth. In addition ,these people can become addicted , and have some difficulties to give up if they try to. The second reason is the social domain. In fact, it may arrive that parent may encounter some trouble in their life, and will not be able to give money to their children; As a result, in order to satisfy their need teenagers leads to be devote in awful thing such stealing in a store or people around them.
2- In COTE D ' IVOIRE, the government do not emphasize on anti-cigarette ads target to teenager; it is your own family who give you advices to give up or not try it at all.
