Have a great weekend

Wow, the weather is so nice and its just going to get better!

Today was a lot of fun. Congratulations to all of the actors and actresses who performed for us today. Nominations for best actor and actress (and supporting actor and actress) will be next week after I post the videos :D

Keep reading Holes. We'll have the vocab test (8-15) either Monday or Tuesday (not sure yet).  Please continue reading until you reach part 2. We'll discuss it in class this week.

For reading, you should do the mastery tests in your book and try the work on the townsendpress website.

For listening, next week we will continue with body language--in depth. If you want to get some listening practice, try the following video. This will prepare you well for what I'll be talking about in class. I think its really excellent practice.

And finally, THE PICNIC. I hope that you guys are going to show up! I will be there around 1 p.m. Let's meet near the basketball courts.
Please coordinate drinks (and water) and other food. I will bring a football, basketball, and some games for us to play. Dohoom will bring a soccer ball. The weather should be great so its going to be a lot of fun.

I will also bring hamburgers, hotdogs, buns, plates, silverware, and cups, ketchup and mustard.

If you need a ride, post a comment. I'm sure we can make it work!

Figures of Speech: Practicing Metaphors and Similes (due Thursday, 10/30)

Metaphors and similes are called FIGURES OF SPEECH.

I gave you an example in class today about similes and metaphors.

Direct statement: This class is the worst class I have ever taken!
Simile: This class is like a nightmare that never ends!
Metaphor: This class is a nightmare that never ends!

Now it's your turn:

Write a simile or metaphor about each of the following: LIFE, LOVE, and MARRIAGE.

For example:
Marriage is like a 3-ring circus. There's the engagement ring, the wedding ring, and the suffering.
JUST A JOKE.

Another example:
"Life is a highway. I want to ride it all night long".--Tom Cochraine (If you want to hear the entire song--its one of my favorites--go to http://www.metrolyrics.com/life-is-a-highway-lyrics-tom-cochrane.html)

I look forward to INFERRING the meaning from your FIGURES OF SPEECH.

Shakespeare's Sonnet 18: One of the greatest similes in English literature

SONNET 18 PARAPHRASE
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Shall I compare you to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate: You are more lovely and more constant:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, Rough winds shake the beloved buds of May
And summer's lease hath all too short a date: And summer is far too short:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, At times the sun is too hot,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd; Or often goes behind the clouds;
And every fair from fair sometime declines, And everything beautiful sometime will lose its beauty,
By chance, or nature's changing course, untrimm'd; By misfortune or by nature's planned out course.
But thy eternal summer shall not fade But your youth shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st; Nor will you lose the beauty that you possess;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade, Nor will death claim you for his own,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st; Because in my eternal verse you will live forever.
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long as there are people on this earth,
So long lives this and this gives life to thee. So long will this poem live on, making you immortal.

Notes

temperate (1): i.e., evenly-tempered; not overcome by passion.

the eye of heaven (5): i.e., the sun.

every fair from fair sometime declines (7): i.e., the beauty (fair) of everything beautiful (fair) will fade (declines). Compare to Sonnet 116: "rosy lips and cheeks/Within his bending sickle's compass come."

nature's changing course (8): i.e., the natural changes age brings.

By the way...

the list for Holes 8-25 was on the blog under Vocabulary lists for Holes (which is what I thought in the first place). So I shouldn't have postponed the vocabulary test. Okay, it's JUST AS WELL, because we have plenty of other things to do tomorrow and this way you'll have more time to get a killer score on this vocabulary test.

Also, I want you to know that I dropped your lowest Holes score when I calculated your vocabulary average. However, I doubled the midterm vocabulary exam as part of that score.

Midterm reading grade = .60 (reading test average) + .40 (vocabulary test average)

Picnic on Sunday from 1-4.

Save the date!

Godwin Park
5101 Rutherglenn Drive
Houston, TX 77096

Meet at the basketball court. There are picnic tables nearby.

My sons will teach you how to play American football.

We'll have a basketball game: 5C vs. 5D.

I will bring burgers and hotdogs to grill and also buns. If you want one, I will collect a few $ from you on Sunday. Everybody else should bring other food, okay?

If you need a ride, please let me know. We'll figure out rides for everybody, don't worry.

Class tomorrow

Hi Everybody.

I hope you're enjoying your midterm break! And for those of you who went to the Renaissance Festival, I hope it was a blast.

Tomorrow we'll be having both classes in the OB multipurpose room.
Scott will teach both classes together for the first two hours while I conference with 5C (one by one).
Then I will teach the last two hours while Scott conferences with 5D (one by one).

Please bring your reading book, your listening book, and Holes. The vocabulary test will be on Wednesday, not tomorrow as I had written on the board.

I look forward to seeing you tomorrow. We're going to have a fun week :D

These answers were taken from your tests!

Only one answer is possible :D

1. Which of the following can be done simultaneously?
   A. Eating and watching t.v.
   B. Sleeping and talking
   C. Texting and paying attention in class
   D. Cooking and playing table tennis

2. Give an example of something you think is preposterous at the LCC.
   A. The abundance of Chinese students
   B. The abundance of Saudi students
   C. The attendance policy

   E. The cost of tuition

But my favorite answer on the test was given by a member of Team China. The question asked you to give an example of something that is deficient in your country.

He answered "population."

Clearly he did not understand the word ;)

The answers to the practices in chapter 5 and 6

are located in the back of your book.

I am not planning to spend any more time on these chapters in class unless you have questions for me tomorrow.

Preparing for the midterm reading exam

I would definitely practice IMPLIED MAIN IDEA on the website because this is something that requires practice. You should also try some of the exercises or mastery tests in relationships I and II.

Vocabulary Review Game

We'll play in class tomorrow. The winners will receive 5 extra points on their vocabulary midterm exam.

I'm assuming that you have already begun to study for this and that you will all be prepared for the review game tomorrow.

I'm not sure if I was clear, but the test will be based on the LIST of words from TS chapter 1, not the SLIDES you made, which were incomplete.

Looking ahead to next week...

On Monday after class, let's go to the UC for some fun and games--bowling, billiards, and ping-pong. Class ends at 12:30 so let's say 1:00. I can hang around until around 3.

Keep reading Holes. I plan to discuss chapters 1-15 with you on Monday or Tuesday. We're going to do something fun with some of the scenes from the novel.

For your midterm exams, there will be a listening test (material to be announced in advance), a reading test (chapters 4-6), and a vocabulary test based on the words you made slides for (called TSchapter1). If you review 10 words a day starting now, you'll be ready for the test. And after the test you'll know A LOT of important words.

Of course, as always, I recommend that you do the practice on the townsendpress.net website.

I will miss you tomorrow and Friday. I hope you have good classes.
