Have a wonderful weekend

We were so busy today in class that I didn't even get the chance to wish you a wonderful weekend and a happy Thanksgiving! If you're traveling out of town, I wish you a safe and memorable trip. If you're staying in town for Black Friday, I wish you a safe and memorable trip ;)

I sent you an evite for the class party at my house, so please check your email (the one you use on the blog), and if you don't see it, check your spam folder.

I want to encourage you to practice in the reading book and on the website because it's fabulous practice for the finals, the Compass, the TOEFL, etc... Also, since we didn't listen to all of the lectures in the listening book, you can listen to the others for more listening practice. And I assure you, the lectures are very interesting.

Extra reading practice

Going to the finals...

Congratulations to Hawra and Kant for defeating Hussain and Doris in today's semi-finals. The final tally was 91 to 83. It was a very good debate with both sides presenting good arguments with good support.

This means that the final match, the match you've all been waiting for, will be Aziz A. and El Hadj representing 5C vs. Hawra and Kant representing 5D.

The time, place, and debate topic will be posted soon. Stay tuned!

Bike riding on Sunday morning (updated)

Okay, so here's who is planning to go:
Aziz, Dohoom, Tesia, Na, Natinee, Justin, and Jianzua.
If you're not going to come, let me know, because I know somebody who would like one of my bikes!

We'll meet at the Costco at 3836 Richmond near Weslayan. Let's meet there at 10 a.m. We will wait until 10:15 to start the ride. Since I don't have a phone, please call Aziz if there's a problem. Aziz--is it okay if I post your phone number here?

Dear Students:

I spoke with 5C about taking a bike ride on Sunday. Aziz A. and Jianzua were interested as well as somebody else (Natinee?) if I could provide a bike.

Is anybody else interested in going for a bike ride? We'll ride through River Oaks to downtown along the Allen Parkway bike trail. It's a great ride and the weather on Sunday is supposed to be beautiful.

If you have a bike, or can borrow one, and you'd like to come, let me know. I might have an extra bike or two, so just let me know if you're interested.

Pronunciation tutoring available tomorrow

Dear Students:

Team Vietnam has told me that they cannot keep their tutoring appointments with Donna Durbin, pronunciation specialist, tomorrow.

If you're interested in meeting with her,  I can schedule you in. There is one appointment at 1:30 and another at 2:30. Let me know ASAP if you're interested. I hate to waste this valuable opportunity with Donna!

Final presentation (next Monday and Tuesday)

With your partner, I'd like you to choose 2 or 3 of the following topics and compare and contrast them between your cultures. Your presentation should last between 8-10 minutes.

1. Attitudes toward time
2. Attitudes toward privacy
3. Gender roles/expectations
4. Educational expectations
5. Friendship
6. Love/romance
7. Touch/space/gestures

I might add some more topics but you can start thinking about these.

Before I assign partners, I need to find out from the debaters who will not be doing these presentations. I know that in 5C Natinee and El Hadj still plan to do presentations and possibly Rawan. I don't know about the debaters in 5D, so please let me know ASAP.

Debate Semifinals

And the question is... are social networking sites (facebook, twitter, etc.) good for society?

Yes (in favor):
5C: El Hadj/Aziz A
5D: Doris/Hussain

No (against):
5C: Rawan/Gedeon/Natinee
5D: Hawra/Kant

It is imperative that each side anticipate the other side's argument!
Also, the judges would like to see some facts and statistics to support your arguments.

First I want to thank all of you for some very well-prepared and well-argued debates. This week was the best!

For Vy (and everybody else)

I mentioned this in 5D today. Please read and comment.

San Francisco Train Passengers Too Distracted By Phones To Notice Shooter's Gun In Plain Sight

While smartphones have been used as a civilian tool for reporting crime, recent footage from a San Francisco murder scene has safety officials more concerned that handheld technology is making people oblivious to their surroundings.

The San Francisco Police Department says that security footage reveals the alleged killer of a young man on a San Francisco light-rail train had his weapon out in plain sight, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. But what investigators found more alarming is that none of the other passengers noticed because they were staring at their phones.

Recently released footage from a Muni security camera allegedly shows that on Sept. 23, Nikhom Thephakayson pulled out a .45-caliber pistol, raised it, pointed it across the aisle, put it down and continued to pull it out multiple times, even wiping his nose with the handgun. Absorbed in their phones, not one of the dozens of passengers reacted until he fired a bullet into the back of Justin Valdez, 20, a sophomore at San Francisco State University.

The shooting is believed to be a random, unprovoked encounter. Investigators later found a large cache of weapons at Thephakayson's home.
"These people are in very close proximity with him, and nobody sees this,” District Attorney George Gascón the Chronicle. “They're just so engrossed, texting and reading and whatnot. They're completely oblivious of their surroundings," he said, adding that the the gunman’s movements with the weapon were not at all concealed.

While no one can say whether more passenger vigilance would have made a difference in Thephakayson’s actions or Valdez’s fate, the footage is troubling for experts.

While most cell phone users are well-acquainted with being sucked into their devices, Western Washington University psychologist Ira Hyman published a study in 2009 to demonstrate the phenomenon. He found that when he employed a clown to ride across campus on a unicycle, only a quarter of the people the clown passed talking on cell phones even noticed him.

Listening #5: Eye Contact in Tokyo (due 11/7)

She says that nobody looks at each other in Japan. One reason is to respect privacy. I think about our society today--how people don't look at each other, not out of respect but out of pure distraction--people looking at their screens instead of at faces! So sad!

I have posted the vocabulary lists for Holes (for the rest of the book) as well as the vocabulary slides. I will give you hard copies of the vocab list tomorrow.
Please be prepared to discuss Holes until chapter 28 on Thursday, not tomorrow.

You were supposed to complete exercise 2, chapter 7 (inference) on the townsendpress.net website. I see that only about 20% of the class has completed this.
